I happened to need a simple tool to enable outgoing email from a Linux server. I discovered SSMTP as extremely simple tool for outgoing email.
to install (on Debian based systems)
Apt-Get install SSMTP
Then configure by editing /etc/ssmtp/ssmtp.conf
